Cleveland Indians catcher Martinez to undergo elbow surgery

Victor Martinez fans will not be ale to see him play for the next six weeks as he is going to undergo an operation on his troublesome right elbow. The Cleveland Indian catcher was placed on a 15 day disabled list last Thursday. Victor Martinez was looking to carry on with where he left last season, but the elbow injury has put an end to all his plans for now.  The loose objects on his throwing elbow will be removed through surgery and Martinez has been asked to take a minimum of 6 weeks rest to recuperate from the surgery. Indians baseball fans can watch the matches by buying tickets through various online sites.

Non-playing Streak Bad for Indians’ Sizemore

The affable Grady Sizemore is certainly not very happy to have skipped two consecutive games recently on Monday, April 28. He is far from ecstatic especially when his sprained ankle is the cause for him missing two games, one on Sunday against the New York Yankees and another game on Monday, both against the Yankees. This halted the All-Star center fielder’s excellent playing streak at 382.

This misfortune started when Sizemore’s ankle got sprained as he stepped on second base during the ninth inning last Saturday. True to his persevering spirit, the 25 year old Seattle resident with batting average of .283, home run record of 78 and 2007 Gold Glove Award winner did not stop to take a break and instead played on even though his ankle throbbed painfully. He managed to score the winning run and led his team to victory but at a price – his ankle swelled even more the next day and was forced to rest on doctor’s orders.

Red Sox Triumps Over Cleveland Indians

The Red Sox were high on victory after winning last Sunday night’s game against the Indians and scored 8-5 much to the chagrin of David Ortiz who has been forced to take a back seat to refresh him out of one of the biggest letdowns in his career. Likewise the Red Sox also won without help from their top relief pitchers, Jonathan Papelbon as well as the ever resilient Hideki Okajima. As much as they would like to participate, they were ordered to take advantage of their much needed rest before the Red Sox go up against the Cleveland Indians yet again on Wednesday night in New York.

Daisuke Matsuzaka was deemed on of the reasons the Red Sox scored an early victory. His winning pitches were more than enough to take the team to a higher level. The affable pitcher threw 116 pitches over his five taxing innings. He lost out on five hits, six walks and four runs, finally striking out two.

Kobayashi debuts for the Cleveland Indians

Masahide Kobayashi debuted for the Cleveland Indians in a spring training match on Friday and did impress his fans as well as the people responsible for bringing him into the side with his throwing skills. Many feel that he will be a big asset to the Indians this season and his throws which are a bit harder will surely give some goose bumps to the hitting rivals. The Japanese pitcher who has a history of making more than 200 saves got into the Indian team by signing a free agent contract after serving for nine long years for the Japanese Pacific League side, Chiba Lotte Marines. Kobayashi was a member of the Japanese team for the 2004 Olympic Games and led the Japanese League with 34 saves in the 2005 season.

The Indian manager, Eric Wedge, feels that the Japanese pitcher is very much a focused player and knows what his task is. He made an impression in the mind of the manger when he pitched out of a jam against the Astros in the Friday’s match. Kobayashi said that he needed to be nervous to stay focused throughout the game and said that his main aim was to get outs one by one. After his amazing display, the think tank of the Cleveland Indians must feel proud for signing Kobayashi.

Cleveland With 3 Key Arms

The Cleveland Indians are still waiting on new information that regards starting pitcher Byrd, his use of human-growth hormones, as well as MLB’s decision on whether or not Paul Byrd is going to face a suspension. With the clock ticking on the player’s 2008 team option, which would have expired Wednesday, we had nothing in mind but baseball. In the end, Cleveland decided Byrd, a 15-game winner last season, is worth keeping around. The same goes for AL saves leader Borowski and left-handed reliever Fultz.

Byrd to Meet After Series

The fact that the World Series were held in Boston allowed MLB to put its interview on hold with the most recent baseball player, who was accused of using human growth hormone. Major League Baseball’s chief operating officer Bob DuPuy said yesterday that because Cleveland did not win the ALCS, the Indians’ pitcher Paul Byrd did not need to be interviewed until after the WS. Last week Paul Byrd said he took hGH via prescription because he suffered from a pituitary gland problem. Commissioner Bud Selig and Bob DuPuy declined to comment on other steroid issues.

MLB to Investigate Byrd Over Hormone Allegations

MLB is going to investigate allegations that the Indians pitcher Paul Byrd purchased and used using human growth hormone, the one that the league bans for muscle-building properties.

It was reported that Paul Byrd purchased almost $25,000 worth of human growth hormone in the period between August 2002 and January 2005, which was before this drug was officially banned.

It was stated by Fox Sports that Paul Byrd didn’t dispute the claims. In an interview he admitted taking human-growth hormone, which will be described in his upcoming book, entitled “The Free Byrd Project.” Byrd stated that he no longer uses the drug, according to Fox Sports.

Indians Win Again

The Indians are only 2 win away from the World Series after yesterday’s 7-3 victory over the Red Sox. Cleveland lead the ALCS three games to one and won thirty-two of their last forty-three going back to the regular season. Johnny Peralta added a 3-run home run. Casey Blake delivered a bloop single that scored Lofton that singled and stole second. Byrd got the win with 5+ innings, allowing 2 runs.

Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox hit consecutive solo home runs in the top of the 6th. In fact, it was the 1st time in the history of the championship series that a team has hit 3 consecutive home runs. Today there is an off day for the Indians that can earn a World Series trip against Colorado with tomorrow’s victory in Cleveland.

Cleveland takes 2-1 lead in ALCS

Starter Jake Westbrook pitched into the 7th inning Monday night and stopped the Red Sox, steering Cleveland to a 4-2 victory in Game 3 of the ALCS.

With Westbrook giving the Indians everything that Matsuzaka did not give Boston on Monday, Cleveland grabbed the upper hand, taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series. Boston was intimidating in winning the opener, but Cleveland won a draining 11-inning Game 2 and seemed the fresher team for Game 3 held at Jacobs Field.

Of the twenty outs that Jake Westbrook recorded, only 3 came on balls hit to the outfield. The player ended 3 innings with double play grounders, one with the bases loaded in the 2nd.
