Takashi Saito, the Dodgers closer, complained of tightness in his right elbow during the game on Saturday against the Marlins in the 9th. After an MRI on Monday, it has been revealed that he is suffering from a sprained elbow ligament, and will need to spend six weeks in rehab to avoid surgery. The good news is that Saito will not need a surgery unless something goes wrong in rehab. Fans with tickets for the Dodgers games do not need to be worried however as Jonathan Broxton is slated to replace Saito.

The affable Grady Sizemore is certainly not very happy to have skipped two consecutive games recently on Monday, April 28. He is far from ecstatic especially when his sprained ankle is the cause for him missing two games, one on Sunday against the New York Yankees and another game on Monday, both against the Yankees. This halted the All-Star center fielder’s excellent playing streak at 382.
This misfortune started when Sizemore’s ankle got sprained as he stepped on second base during the ninth inning last Saturday. True to his persevering spirit, the 25 year old Seattle resident with batting average of .283, home run record of 78 and 2007 Gold Glove Award winner did not stop to take a break and instead played on even though his ankle throbbed painfully. He managed to score the winning run and led his team to victory but at a price – his ankle swelled even more the next day and was forced to rest on doctor’s orders.

Brian Cashman, the General Manager of the Yankees is expecting to get a new contract by the end of this season. Cashman was only19 years old, when he joined Yankees, as an intern in the year 1986. He took over the post of General Manager in the year 1997 as a successor of Bob Watson. Steinbrenner said that, he has known Cashman personally for along time but, is unable to predict whether Cashman would like to stay on as the General Manager again. Steinbrenner values Cashman for his organizational abilities and to put everything in place. Steinbrenner is happy with the way things are going now. He is very impressed with the work of the new manager Joe Giardi. Both Cashman and Steinbrenner are positive about the outcome of the discussion of the contract.

Buddy Bailey is a long time serving manager in the various Minor league baseball clubs in the U.S. He found his success after joining the Tigres de Aragua club of Venezuelan league or LVBP and since 2002 the Araguans have won four championships and one sub championship. It is the passion for the sport that brings this workaholic man to Venezuela every year in October, once the winter season sets in the U.S. Many American coaches have put their strong feet on the Venezuelan soil, but none were able to achieve what Bailey has so far achieved.
According to Bailey, most American players or coaches who visit Venezuela during the American winter season go there for only a year. But Bailey is of the opinion that one has to get acclimatized with the league as well as the foreign playing conditions to come up with a commendable performance. Moreover, a manager or trainer needs ample time to understand each player and his playing abilities as well as the opponent teams skills and weaknesses. Bailey’s inaugural season in Venezuela in 2003 saw stupendous success and the Tigres team won back to back titles in the successive years. Most of the players as well as the coaches in the Venezuelan baseball league classify him to be a very successful and hardworking manager.

The Detroit Tigers are talking with Curtis Granderson about a long-term contract extension. Curtis Granderson is not set to became a free agent until the end of the 2011 season, however. Last year Granderson made $410,000 and was thinking that maybe the team could sign him a likeminded contract for the 2008 season. The club now has more of a reason to sign Curtis to a long-term contract over the next few months after he was almost selected for his first All-Star game. The Detroit Tigers would prefer the contract to stretch a minimum of one season. At this point contract length or salary have not been discussed.

Atlanta Braves reached a tentative deal to acquire the oft-injured Kotsay from the Oakland Athletics for reliever Joey Devine. The trade is contingent on Kotsay passing a physical and the commissioner’s office approving the money involved in the deal. Kotsay hit .214 with one homer and 20 RBIs in 56 games last year. He is a career .282 hitter in 11 seasons in the majors.
He had surgery last spring and missed the first two months of the season unfortunately.

The San Diego Padres have purchased the contract of third baseman Gary Schneidmiller from the Amarillo Dillas. Schneidmiller will report to Spring Training in Peoria, AZ with a chance to make the Double-A San Antonio Missions. Schneidmiller had 33 extra base hits this past season and with the departure of David Freese to St. Louis in a deal that netted Jim Edmonds there is little competition at the hot corner in Double-A.
