Non-playing Streak Bad for Indians’ Sizemore

The affable Grady Sizemore is certainly not very happy to have skipped two consecutive games recently on Monday, April 28. He is far from ecstatic especially when his sprained ankle is the cause for him missing two games, one on Sunday against the New York Yankees and another game on Monday, both against the Yankees. This halted the All-Star center fielder’s excellent playing streak at 382.

This misfortune started when Sizemore’s ankle got sprained as he stepped on second base during the ninth inning last Saturday. True to his persevering spirit, the 25 year old Seattle resident with batting average of .283, home run record of 78 and 2007 Gold Glove Award winner did not stop to take a break and instead played on even though his ankle throbbed painfully. He managed to score the winning run and led his team to victory but at a price – his ankle swelled even more the next day and was forced to rest on doctor’s orders.

Posada and coach Girardi locking horns over Posada’s return

The New York Yankees clubhouse is witnessing a different mood recently owing to the small deadlock that is brewing between catcher Jorge Posada and Coach Joe Girardi as the long time Yankees catcher is of the opinion that he has fully recovered from his strained right shoulder and is fit to play and coach Girardi thinks otherwise. Yankees will be closing their three game weekend series in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon and are also slated to three more games at Chicago from Tuesday.

Girardi says that he is waiting for Posada to tell him that he has fully recovered from the shoulder strain, as the coach feels that Posada is still finding the pinch in his shoulder. Posada has revealed that his arm has become pretty stronger and feels that it will get better only if he gets the opportunity to pitch in the match. The coach said that he is not worried of Jorge’s arm power, but the only concern is his baseball pitching ability behind the plate.

Yankees coach not pleased with accident to Cervelli

Joe Girardi of the New York Yankees seemed to be pretty much upset with the crash of a Tampa Bay Rays minor league player Elliot Johnson on his prospective season catcher Francisco Cervelli that led to the fracture of the right wrist of the young player. The exhibition game at Legends Field was won by the Rays 4-1, but the coach said that this crash was unwarranted for in an exhibition game. Girardi said that he was 100% endorsing the view that each player must work hard, but it does not mean that a runner has to go overboard and run over a catcher and that too in a spring training game.

The Yankees player Francisco Cervelli said that he did not think that it was that hard a tackle and said that all these are part of the game. The manager of the Rays team, Joe Maddon, said that he was game for the hard play and wished his team plays like this throughout the forthcoming season. Cervelli is one of the top most defensive catching prospects that are available for Girardi for the season, and the Yankees still are not aware of the time Francisco’s right wrist would take to heal or whether it will need any medical procedure to set it right.

Brian Cashman, the General Manager of the Yankees is expecting to get a new contract by the end of this season. The talks will go on between the senior vice president of Yankees, Hank Steinbrenner and Cashman during this season. Cashman is in the last year of his present contract and he wants to keep any talk about the new deal as a matter only between him and Steinbrenner. Joba is Least Bothered About His Role

Joba Chamberlain, the most prized right handed player of New York Yankees is ready to pitch the balls, whether he is a starter or reliever. He announced during his batting practice for the spring that it won’t make any difference to him where he is positioned as the pitching staff of the Yankees. He ended his last year season as a rookie and will begin this year’s season in the bullpen and is expected to join the rotation later. Joba, who is only 22 years of age, became fans favorite player at the Yankee stadium in the last season. He was welcomed with loud applause for his pitching session this spring.

Last year he missed his play in the first month of the season because of a hamstring injury and played only 18 minor league matches before joining the Yankees. In his training session he threw 27 pitches and the Senior Vice president Stein Brenner was satisfied with Joba’s performance. The New Yankees manager also expressed his satisfaction about Joba’s pitching by saying “it is just explosive stuff”. With the amount of hard work Joba Chamberlain has put in for his improvement this year, he is expecting a great and satisfying career this year.
